The history of Bodegas Tritium is born from a personal love for old vineyards. A love that allows us to have eight hectares of vines today, whose age ranges between 90 and 113 years. These are estates that never joined the two large mass uprootings in La Rioja: the first in the 60s and 70s, encouraged by the mechanization of viticulture tasks and the second, related to the arrival of multinationals in the sector in the 80s.
In the 70s, to allow mechanized work and facilitate the entry of the tractor, vines were uprooted, unlike in France, where winegrowers adapted the tractor to the width of traditional vineyards. On the other hand, the arrival of large groups to Rioja brought as a result a strong demand for grapes within the Rioja Designation of Origin. This, added to the good prices of the grapes (with hardly any differentiation in quality), meant the replacement of old vines (with lower production) by new ones. The loss of vineyards and wine-growing assets was very high, in the name of higher yields.
